Growing Tales – Sharing my growth journey

  1. I am very glad you took the things back. I always got a very strong sense that someone was quite sad they were gone.

  2. The little mexican primitive was part of a “circle of love” or “circle of life” – i am wondering what happened that it has been separated from the circle. Was it out of sadness – or was it just an unfortunatel event. Either way, it is not complete without the others in the circle.

    • I agree. The obvious fact that it was broken and is no longer in the circle makes me sad and I just hope that whoever placed it in the log is not feeling alone. I found a very cool mexican primitive circle of love online that I currently covet!

  3. I’m fascinated by the Mexican Primitive. When I lived in Hawaii, there were always little places like that. Even the ocean was not off limits. People would throw flower leis into the ocean as a honor to someone else, or as a prayer, etc. There were several places with wooden towers (tall to semi-tall, 6 to 9 ft) with food and flowers put on and under them as tributes to God (or sometimes a particular spirit of the old cultural). There were caves at other parts of the island that had old writing and other items of very curious design. They were supposed to be sacred areas, which should not be severely disturbed, just observed, and maybe leave one of your own items if desired.

    • I think sacred is the exact word to describe the feeling I felt when I came upon this little “shrine” in the woods.

      • I’m not sure I would use the term sacred because that would mean it has or had some religious purpose. I, on the other hand, think it is more of a spiritual place which I consider it to be a place that affects the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. Normally, I would think, if someone goes to the trouble of making this place and placing something in it that means something important to them, it would be spiritual rather than religious.

      • Of course, I stink and I could not make it by your shop on Saturday. I got the picture you sent of your work. It is fascinating and I do need to see it real time….Can I post the picture you sent me here?

  4. Have you and Tippi looked at the parallels with your totems and work? The broken circle, the take away and put back. The missing pieces. Just something that struck me as I read through the comments.

    • We both work with found objects and like to use “junk” in our art. In addtion we both really like creating mix-media art, pieces from here and there and art techniques that are from here and there. We love the stories of old things but like to take the old and fit it into a new paradigm through our art. My totem is the bird. I suppose that Tippi’s is a fluer de lis or an angel. In addition a lot of her work uses disembodied doll heads….
We have not discussed it. What do you think is the similarity.

      • We do both work with found objects and “junk” but there are many different elements to what we both do. Doll heads LOL I love dolls and always have. I really do not look at the heads as creepy as some people do. I look at them as a sort of reincarnation of something that has been tossed aside. I make them new again – in several different forms. Oh yes, I know, you are thinking about “Freaky Frannie.” Well FF was very specific to an event – she loved being reborn and repurposed making a completely new statement to the world. As to my the fleur de lis – that is what is in my heart. My angels are spiritual – they are reincarnated or repurposed in many aspects of life – spiritual life but you have to look at them and the descriptions of them to know what I am talking about. Nothing is as simple as it seems.
